Modem configuration: Windows 98/ME

This guide provides customers using Windows 98 or Windows ME the information needed to setup a computer to connect to Optus Dial-up Internet.

Step 1 of 10

  • Windows 98
    • Double-click the My Computer icon on your desktop.
    • Double-click the Dial-Up Networking icon.
  • Windows Me
    • Click on Start, then Settings, then click on Dial-Up Networking.
  • Double-click the Make New Connection icon.
  • You will then see the following window.
  • In the box for the name of the computer you're dialling, type Optus Internet.
  • Select the type of modem that is installed in your system.
  • Click the Next button.

  • Do not enter anything into the Area Code box.
  • Type the Australia-wide Optus Dial-up Internet access number 0198 331 111 into the Telephone Number box
    Select the Country Code as Australia.
  • Click the Next button.

  • Click the Finish button.
  • Finish here if you are using Windows Me.

Step 4 of 10

  • Remove the tick from Use area code and Dialling Properties unless you are required to connect to Optus Dial-up Internet by calling STD.
  • Click on the Server Types tab.

  • In the box Type of Dial-Up Server make sure that PPP is selected.
  • The only box to be ticked in the Advanced options area is Enable software compression.
  • The only box to be ticked in the Allowed network protocols area is TCP/IP.
  • Click the TCP/IP Settings button.
  • This window may look slightly different depending upon the version of Windows 98 you are using.

Step 6 of 10

  • Select Server assigned IP address.
  • Select Server assigned name server addresses.
  • Place a tick in both Use IP header compression and Use default gateway on remote network.
  • Click the OK button.

Step 7 of 10

  • Click the OK button on each remaining window until you are returned to the Dial-Up Networking window.

Step 8 of 10

  • Select the Connections menu option located at the top of the window.
  • Select Settings from the drop-down menu.

Step 9 of 10

  • Place a tick next to Show icon on taskbar.
  • Place a tick next to Prompt for information before dialling.
  • The options in the bottom half of this window can be set to your liking.
  • Click the OK button.

Step 10 of 10

  • You can now close the Dial-Up Networking window.

Your connection to Optus Dial-up Internet is now configured.
